Stephen Flynn, Managing Director of North East-based shopfitting and fit-out specialist Rosebirch, has joined the Executive Council of the National Association of Shopfitters (NAS), bringing more than three decades of industry experience to the organisation’s leadership team. The appointment recognises Stephen’s longstanding connection with the association and his commitment to developing skills, apprenticeships and opportunities within the shopfitting sector.
The association with NAS started when Rosebirch joined as a member in the 1980s, while Stephen himself attended his first NAS regional meeting in the late 1990s. He now takes a place on the elected body responsible for helping shape the association’s policy and direction.
His career has followed a similarly long-standing path within the industry. Stephen began his career as an apprentice in 1990, working his way through every department of the family business before becoming Managing Director in 2018. That hands-on experience has given him an understanding of the industry from both the shop floor and senior management perspective.
For Stephen, the appointment is an opportunity to contribute to the future of an industry in which he has spent his entire working life. “Rosebirch’s membership of the NAS has always been about being part of a larger voice for the industry,” he says. “For me, that has always been particularly important when it comes to training, development and apprenticeships. We are passionate about creating opportunities, and I’m looking forward to helping the NAS continue that work.”
His involvement with skills development extends beyond his role at Rosebirch. Stephen has also served on the National Working Group for Wood Occupations participating in the review of National Occupational Standards. He has also worked directly with CITB as part of the Employer Network Steering Group.
That focus on people and skills is reflected in his approach to running Rosebirch. Based in High Spen, Tyne and Wear, the second-generation family business specialises in bespoke shopfitting, joinery and commercial fit-out projects for clients across the UK and Europe. The company operates from a 15,000 sq ft manufacturing facility and combines traditional craftsmanship with modern manufacturing technology.
Stephen says one of his proudest achievements is the loyalty and retention of the Rosebirch workforce. Many employees have remained with the business for years, including people who were already working at the company when he himself was an apprentice. The company also continues to invest in apprenticeships and training as part of its approach to developing the next generation of skilled workers.
James Filus of the NAS said of the appointment: “Stephen joining us comes at an important time for the shopfitting and interior contracting sector, with businesses facing ongoing challenges around skills, recruitment, training and the development of new talent. “The NAS Executive Council provides a platform for industry leaders to contribute to the direction of the sector and represent the interests of its membership. Stephen’s combination of practical trade experience, family-business leadership and involvement in skills development gives him a strong perspective on some of the issues facing the industry.”
Stephen’s appointment also represents a milestone for Rosebirch at a time of significant growth. The company says it is proud to see its Managing Director take on a role that will allow him to contribute to the wider industry while continuing to champion the values of training, craftsmanship and long-term development.
Stephen concluded: “I’m delighted to have the opportunity to contribute to the Executive Council. The shopfitting industry has given me a great career, and I believe we have a responsibility to make sure the next generation has the same opportunities. If we can encourage more young people into the sector, support businesses in developing their people and continue to raise standards, then we can build a stronger industry for everyone.”
