Recycling specialist Scott Bros is set to donate up to 40 tonnes of high-quality compost to Teesside residents as part of this year’s National Gardening Week.
The family-run firm will deliver a tipper truck load to Stockton Borough Council’s former incinerator site, located beneath the flyover near Newport Bridge, on the morning of April 27. The compost will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, with a second load scheduled for the following morning.
The initiative forms part of a wider Stockton Borough Council campaign supporting National Gardening Week, which runs from April 27 to May 3. This year’s theme encourages people to get curious about their gardens by exploring the small details that bring outdoor spaces to life.
Scott Bros’ annual compost giveaway has become a popular fixture in the local calendar. The compost is produced at the company’s Norton Bottoms site using green waste collected by local authorities, including Stockton and Middlesbrough. It is processed through windrow composting to create a nutrient-rich product that meets PAS 100 quality standards.
Bob Borthwick, a director at Haverton Hill-based Scott Bros, said: “It’s something we always look forward to supporting. There’s a real appetite across Teesside for gardening, and it’s great to be able to help people make the most of their outdoor spaces, from gardens and allotments to pots and window boxes.
“By offering this compost free of charge, we’re also showing how green waste can be recycled into something genuinely useful for the community. If the demand is there, we’ll be back with a second load to make sure as many people as possible can benefit.”
Scott Bros supplies compost across the region for use in agriculture, landscaping and domestic gardening projects.
He added: “It’s a practical example of the circular economy in action, turning local waste into a resource that supports healthier soils, stronger plant growth and greener spaces across Teesside.”
